Family Counseling

Sometimes even the best of families have trouble communicating.

Couples and family counseling typically brings partners in a relationship together for joint therapy sessions. Sometimes a Texas PCS therapist may use “private caucuses” to separate couples or family members if he or she determines that a “caucus" is needed.  Working with a  Texas PCS counselor, you will learn fundamental skills to build and solidify your relationship. Some specific skills may include, but not limited to communicating openly, solving problems jointly, fair play to resolve conflict, negotiation skills, discussing your differences rationally, and other significant relational skills.  Texas PCS counselors will assist you in analyzing both positive and negative aspects of your relationship, as you learn to identify and improve your understanding of the source of your conflicts.

If you or your partner is coping with personal stress, mental illness, substance abuse or other issues, your Texas PCS counselor can work with other health care professionals to provide complete treatment options.  If your partner refuses to attend marital or relationship counseling sessions, you can still attend.  The counselors at Texas PCS will work with you individually and help you sort things out and make some decisions about how you want to proceed with your life.  You should be aware that it is much more challenging to heal a relationship when only one person is engaged in the counseling process.  However, we believe that you can still benefit by learning more about yourself and your reactions and behavior in the relationship.

Couples and family counseling is often short term.  You might need only a few sessions to help you and your partner weather a crisis or you may require several months of intense family therapy, especially if your relationship has significantly deteriorated.  Your specific treatment plan will depend on your individual and unique family situation.  Texas PCS counselors will help you work through your relationship problems and assist you in arriving at solutions that will help stabilize your relationships whether you are seeking couples or family counseling.
