Individual Counseling Services

Life can be challenging and is often stressful. People experience those challenges in a number of different ways: difficulties adjusting, confusion in decision making, struggles in relationships, making friends, or getting along with a partner. Many individuals feel anxious, depressed, confused, or overwhelmed at some point and need help dealing with feelings and problems that seem beyond their control.

For many, that help may come from friends, family members, significant others, etc.; however, in some cases help is needed from a trained professional. Counseling is a process that can help you identify more effective strategies both to cope with difficult situations and to achieve your goals. While some people who seek counseling have chronic emotional difficulties, others are dealing with normal life events and are simply in need of an objective listener - someone who does not judge and who can help them see new alternatives.

Individual Counseling is basically a collaborative effort between you and your counselor. Our goal is to provide an open, supportive, and confidential environment for you to address the issues that are concerning you.

Who Can Benefit from Counseling?

Just about anyone can benefit from Individual Counseling.  Listed below are just a few examples of some common concerns which brings individuals to Texas PCS:

  • Symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Troubled Parent-Child relationship problems.
  • Bereavement and grief related to the loss of a loved one (such as relationship breakups, deaths, parental divorce, or other major losses).
  • Self-esteem.

What to Expect

Our Individual Counseling services are designed to meet your individual needs and concerns.  As part of the initial interview, you will be asked to complete paperwork which will help us get to know you.  Please allow 90 minutes for this first appointment.  We generally will send the intake paperwork to you, prior to your session.

You and your counselor will work together to decide how frequently and for how long a period it is necessary to meet.  In some cases, you may be referred to providers outside of Texas PCS.  This decision is made on a case-by-case basis and is determined by the appropriateness of your individualized treatment situation, our expertise in treating your particular problem and/or concern, the availability of staff and other resources, as well as potential other factors.

It is essential that you arrive promptly for your first appointment in order to allow sufficient time to review the necessary paperwork.  If you are more than 15 minutes late for your first appointment, you will be asked to reschedule, and a fee will be applied.

The purpose of this first session is for your intake counselor to obtain information about your current concerns, relevant history, and goals.  Your counselor should also review relevant Texas PCS policies and procedures, such as confidentiality.  At the end of the appointment, you and your counselor will determine an appropriate course of action.
